Pinot Noir

An elegant noble variety, Pinot Noir is low-yielding and high-quality in Prince Edward County.  Sturdy acidity and complex aromas that develop with ageing.

Cabernet Franc

One of the more ancient grape varieties, Cabernet Franc is an ancestor of Cabernet Sauvignon and others.  In a ripe year, Cab Franc manifests with intense fruit flavours underpinned with bright acidity. 

Gewurztraminer

We make gewurz in a dry style.  With zippy acidity almost like ginger on the palate and a nifty aroma of lychee fruit, this aromatic is delightfully refreshing.

Chenin Blanc

We are the stewards of the oldest surviving planting of Chenin Blanc in Prince Edward County.  Chenin is not widely grown outside of South Africa and the Loire Valley.  The County version of Chenin Blanc must be tasted -- it is pristine, flinty, fruity and refreshing.

Pinot Meunier

A red grape similar to Pinot Noir in flavour.  We planted Meunier to use in our tradition method sparkling wine.  We press it almost immediately on harvesting, yielding a blanc-de-noir cuvee.   On a riper year we occasionally make a barrel of pure Pinot Meunier.  If you see it, snap it up!  It's rare.

St. Laurent

A rare varietal, we have only one vintage of St. Laurent which we picked in 2019 in the Velo Vineyard.  Tragically, the Velo Vineyard was torn up the following year.  Earthy on the nose, plummy on the palate, we wish we had another vintage.

Gamay Noir

Some early growers believe that we in Prince Edward County should have hitched our wagons to Gamay Noir.  It produces reliable yields, with intense flavour and colours.  Our Gamay Noir is harvested at By Chadsey's Cairns close to Lake Ontario, and we use it for an unoaked varietal wine and a sparkling red called Power Take Off.

Chardonnay

One of our Winery founding varieties, Chardonnay in the County is simply incredible.  We make several tiers of chardonnay ranging from an oaked reserve to a fruity unoaked sipper.  It also contributes to our premium traditional method wine Amour.

Riesling

A classic grape, late ripening, that we use to make both a dry still wine and our popular off-dry Exuberance Sparkling Wine.

Pinot Gris

Pinot Gris, with its russet coloured skin and early ripening habit, creates some unique wines.  Not your typical boring Pinot Gris (yes, we think the average pinot gris is a boring wine... sorry).  We like to make Pinot Gris wines that have had some skin contact so that the gorgeous colour of the grape can manifest in the wine.

Our wines are grown, not manufactured.  The grapes that make our wines special come from four special vineyards in Prince Edward County. 

Kuepfer Vineyard

The Home Farm or Kuepfer Vineyard is where we started our winery dream.  As winemakers and owners, we live on site.  Our soils are a heavy clay/limestone gravel mix called Hillier Clay Loam -- a 500 million year old limestone deposit that was ground up into a clay/gravel mix by massive glaciers during the last ice age --  ideal for growing world class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.  The site is close enough to Lake Ontario to enjoy some mitigation of frost but has enough elevation and distance inland to enjoy ripening sunshine and heat.  This part of the County is in a rain shadow, meaning the clouds tend to split and disperse when passing over, providing the arid climate grapevines enjoy most.  Varieties grown here include Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Meunier.

Applehouse Vineyard

We're the caretakers of one of the first commercial plantings in the County by grape growing pioneers Richard Johnston and Vida Žalnieriunas.   The Applehouse vineyard is framed by a majestic maple forest and pushes its roots deep into rare sandy soils called Brighton Gravelly Sand.  Less than a kilometer from the shore of Lake Ontario, this five acre parcel on an ancient sand dune is cooled by lake breezes, yielding stunningly fresh Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Chardonnay.

King Eddie Vineyard

The majestic King Eddie Vineyard was also planted by Richard and Vida at By Chadsey's Cairns.  It stretches over a deposit of Brighton Gravelly Sand down to a lower plain of Hillier Clay Loam, providing benefits from both soil types.  Varieties planted here include Gamay Noir, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Chenin Blanc.

Domaine L

A six year old planting on shallow Hillier Clay Loam, this Pinot Noir and Riesling vineyard on Closson Ridge has the perfect south-east slope.  Because of its location, soils, and aspect, we expect great things from this tiny plot of land.   Domain L was planted and is owned by Linda Lavallee and Conrad Lemieux.  We're delighted to have the opportunity to nurture this 3 acre plot while Conrad and Linda contemplate their next steps.
