Broken Stones

Broken limestone litters our vineyard floor

Without weeds to pull and vines to nurture, our soils are free to reveal their true nature.  And the nature of our soil, “Hillier Clay Loam”, is a hard-hearted one. The fractured stone is tough for kneeling on, but great for growing delicious winegrapes!

The vines we so carefully tied down in October are now slumbering under a heavy blanket of protective soil.  The hills go all the way up to the fruiting wire. Tieing the vines down is an enormous effort. burying them is hard on the soil. But it’s really the only way to be sure of a good crop next year.  And that means more, better wine.

Some well-hilled vines!
